The Mojave Audio Story

David Royer started Mojave Audio in 1985 in the garage of his house. The location was Anaheim, California, and Mojave Audio was a one-man, custom pro audio gear shop. David is best known for his ribbon microphone designs with Royer Labs , but he originally started out designing and building vacuum tube microphones, mic pre's and compressors for engineers in the Los Angeles area. His custom condenser mics have been used on many hit recordings over the years. For engineers who know about them, David's early tube condenser mics are highly prized possessions.

Royer Labs is a ribbon microphone company and it will continue to concentrate solely on ribbon mics. But David knows his way around tubes and over the years he has developed a number of condenser microphones. In 2001, he worked up a kit that let people modify Marshall MXL 2001 mics into higher quality tube condenser microphones. He wrote an article for Tape Op Magazine on how to perform the modification, and later wrote a 2nd article on modifying a Marshall small diaphragm mic into a tube condenser microphone.

The kits were well received and a number of engineers modified their microphones according to David's design, but both kits were discontinued in May 2005 so Mojave Audio could concentrate on developing and producing our new line of pro audio gear. The first Mojave Audio production product is the new MA-200 vacuum tube condenser microphone. There will be more products released over the next few years, including a small diaphragm tube condenser mic that is already being beta tested by a few of our LA based engineer pals.
